Theotokos (Θεοτόκος) Trikala
The village of Theotokos, Trikala (municipal community of Achladea - municipal unit of Chasia) belongs to the municipality of Meteora, Trikala prefecture, located in the Region of Thessaly.
During the administrative division of Greece with the Kapodistrias plan, until 2010, Theotokos belonged to the local district of Achladea, the former municipality of Chasia, Trikala prefecture.
General
The village is located in the northern part of Trikala prefecture, east of the village of Agiofyllo and west of the village of Achladea. The northern part of its area forms the natural border with the prefecture of Grevena. It is 28 kilometers from Kalambaka and has an altitude of 600 meters above sea level. Before the new names of the 1950s, it was called Fliaka Kerasia[2].
Historical data
Population development
From the records of the Holy Monasteries of Meteora, it appears that the area of the village was inhabited by nomads who found favorable conditions for grazing their flocks.
In 1754, 11 families lived there, in 1758 4 families, in 1765 8 families, in 1767 5 families, in 1769 7 families[3], in 1772 6 families and in 1820-1821 it had 3 buildings. With the liberation of Thessaly in 1881 it had 109 residents, in 1896 it had 144 and in 1907 it had 200. With the 1961 census, the settlement had 463 residents, while in 1977 the general population was 550 residents, of whom 196 were immigrants abroad. With the 1981 census it had 394 residents.
In the late 1950s, the primary school of Theotokou had around 100 students. In 2009 there were 80 residents in the village, while in 2021 the actual population is less than 60 people. Together with the other village of the municipal community, Achladea, in 2021, 130 people were enumerated[4].
Sights
Church of the Assumption of the Virgin
It is built to the west of the village, in the area called Paliochori. It is of Byzantine style with a dome and was built in 1977 on the site of an older church, which was of the basilica style with a narthex dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin.
Very close by there is a small church dedicated to Saint George, which was built on the site of a nave of the same name.
Church of Saint John the Baptist
It is located in the center of the village and was founded in 1967, while it was inaugurated in 1974.
Tsioumantala
Southeast of the village there is the hill of Tsioumantala. At the foot there is the chapel of Saint Paraskevi.
Ai-lias
It is the highest point of the village. It is located northeast of it in an area full of oak trees. It took its name from the chapel of the prophet Elias.
