Thanas (Θάνας) Arkadia
Thanas is a settlement in the Peloponnese in the Regional Unit of Arkadia.[2][3]
Geographical information
Thanas is located at an altitude of 730 meters[4] and a distance of approximately 5 km. south of the center of Tripoli, while the A/D Tripoli - Kalamata highway passes to the northwest and the EO Tripoli - Sparta to the northeast. The parish church of the village is the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.[5] Its attractions include the chapel of Agios Giannis (1859) and the ruins of a Muslim mosque.[6]
Historical - administrative data
The French traveler François Pouqueville mentions it as Thana (Pouqueville, Voyage 5, 489) as does the Englishman Leake again with the same name (Leake, Morea I, 117). In the Morea Campaign it is recorded under the name Thana as belonging to the Province of Tripolitsa (Tripolitsa) and having a population of 62 families (a total of 310 people) while later in the "Archive of Ioannis Kapodistrias" as Thana as having 68 families (a total of 294 people).[7]
It is mentioned, after the completion of the Revolution of 1821, in 1835 with its old name from the Turkish rule as Pallantion (Thana) being annexed to the then municipality of Pallantiou and in 1912 being corrected to Thana.[8] According to the Kallikrates plan and its amendment by Cleisthenes I, together with Perpataris, they form the community of Thanas[9], which falls under the municipal unit of Tripoli of the Municipality of Tripoli and according to the 2021 census has a population of 268 residents[10] while according to the 2011 census it had 285[11].
