Stouppaioi is a lowland village in southern Evia and the Regional Unit of Evoia.[1]

Geographical - historical data

Stouppaioi is built at an altitude of 243 meters[2] at a distance of 20 km. NW. from Karystos (seat of the municipality), 13 km. N. from Marmari and 106 km southeast of Chalkida. On the hill of Prophet Elias there are "visible ancient building remains and collected shells dating from the archaic to classical times" which is why the area has been declared an archaeological site since 2001.[3] The village is officially mentioned, after the Revolution of 1821 and the incorporation of Evia, written Stoupaioi in 1835, being annexed to the then municipality of Karystos and in 1913 in the Government Gazette 200A - 09/10/1913 being designated as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name. In 1940 their name was corrected to Stouppaioi.[4] According to the Kallikratis program, together with Vatisi, Varellai, Rizovouni and Kalogeri, they form the local community of Stouppaioi which falls under the municipal unit of Marmari of the Municipality of Karystos and according to the 2011 census as a community it has a total of 215 residents while as a settlement 117.[5]
