Stenyklaros (Στενύκλαρος) Messinia
Stenyklaros is a settlement in the Peloponnese, in the Regional Unit of Messinia.[1][2]
General information
Stenyklaros is located northeast of Meligalas (the seat of the municipality), at a distance of approximately 4 km. from its center and 34 km. NW. from Kalamata, while it has an altitude of 90 meters[3]. Its name is due to the ancient city of Stenyklaros which was located in the wider area and was the capital of the five cities of Messinia, when it was occupied by Cresphontes. However, because this angered the Dorians, because it equated them with the Messenians, he changed his mind and designated only Stenyklaros as a city, where he settled the Dorians (Strabo 8,4,7).[4]
Historical - administrative data
The English traveler William Leake mentions it as Alitouri (Morea I, 78, 482) as does the Frenchman François Poqueville ("Journey to Greece", VI, 45). In the Morea Campaign it is recorded under the name Alitouri as belonging to the Province of Leontario (Léondari) → Section de Lakki and having a population of 25 families (total 68 people) while later in the "Archive of Ioannis Kapodistrias" as Stenyklaros in the Province of Arcadia with 25 families (total 68 people).[5]
It is officially mentioned as a separate settlement, after the completion of the Revolution of 1821, with the old name Aleitourgoi, in 1835 being annexed to the then municipality of Stenyklaros. In 1912 it was designated as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name and in 1916 it was renamed Stenyklaros.[6] According to the Kallikrates plan and its amendment by Cleisthenes I, it is a community[7] that falls under the municipal unit of Meligala of the Municipality of Oichalia. According to the 2021 census, 33 residents were registered[8] while in the 2011 census it had 46[9].
