Stenimachos (Στενήμαχος) Imathia
Stenimachos (or Choropani as the locals call it) is a village in Imathia[1], administratively part of the enlarged Municipality of Naoussa.[2] It is located at an altitude of 153 meters at the foot of Mount Vermio, spread out over the fertile plain of Naoussa[3]. It is located 7 kilometers southeast of Naoussa, while it is 13 kilometers from the capital of the prefecture, Veroia. Its inhabitants are mainly engaged in livestock farming and agriculture, as well as viticulture.
Its old name was Dichalevri. It was later called Choropani and changed in 1953, when the village was named Stenimachos, as was the Bulgarian city of Asenovgrad in Eastern Rumelia, from where the majority of the village's residents originate. In the 1960s, Stenimachos, like the wider area, experienced significant industrial development. In 1967, one of the most famous wineries in Greece, the Boutaris winery, opened for the first time. Other industrial units of Naoussa, mainly textile factories, were also based in Stenimachos.[4] The ruins of the old settlement "Dihalevri" and the house of "Geros Karatasos", a famous chieftain in the Naoussa revolution, are preserved in the area.[4]
Since 1998, with the Kapodistrias law, the village belongs to the Municipality of Naoussa. According to the 2011 census, it has 710 permanent residents.[5]
