Stavrodromi (Σταυροδρόμι) Arkadia
Stavrodromi is a village in Arcadia. It belongs to the Municipality of Gortynia with the Administrative Reform of Kallikratis (2011), while previously it belonged to the Municipality of Tropaia. Until 20/8/1927 the village was called "Alvanitsa".
Mavrada Settlement
From Stavrodromi we take the road to Aetorrachi (10 km). The road descends in a serpentine manner, to the Mavrada ravine (about 6 km). Here was the largest mill site in the area (after the bridge we will find a ruined watermill, with its millstone). At this point is also the old fountain which was used for water supply and for the settlement of the village
Location
The Crossroads has an altitude of 621 meters above sea level, at latitude 37.703136053 and longitude 21.9487907906. It is also located at the intersection of the Tripoli-Olympia national road and the Kontovazaina-Tropaion provincial road.
Important buildings
A special feature of the village is the large ratio of churches-residents which reveals the strong religious element of the area. In a prominent position at the entrance to the village is a ten-meter cross which, in addition to the theological, also has etymological significance since the village is an intersection of the two largest roads in the area. In a prominent position, in the heart of the village, is the central church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (1910) which features impressive hagiographies curated by monks from Mount Athos. Of the other buildings, the old elementary school (1909) stands out, which now functions as a folk art museum. The Holy Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, one of the most beautiful stone-built churches in Gortynia. Its initial construction was 1896-1910. The architect is the same one who designed the Churches of Agios Georgios Tropaion, Agios Nikolaos Doxas, Agia Paraskevi Tripolis. It was a great dare of the architect to erect such a large dome for the meager mechanical means of the time.
Geomorphological characteristics
The village has a fairly large percentage of flat land plots given the morphology of the relief of the wider area. The Mavrada ravine, the main source of water for the village's residents until recently, is located quite a distance from the center of the village, which highlights how favorable the location is in terms of other characteristics, such as cultivability, is in terms of the village's creation.
Wine Festival
Since 1989, the "Wine Festival" had been established in Stavrodromi. It is a celebration, a festival, with which people have the opportunity to thank nature for what it offers them. At the same time, the goal is the revival and preservation of traditions that are in danger of being lost. The event attracted many residents and foreign visitors every year, who all participated in the traditional feast that followed. The Cultural Association of Stavrodomitons of Tripoli was responsible for the organization. In recent years, unfortunately, this celebration has not taken place. Its duration was from September 1 to 30.
