Sperchogeia (Σπερχόγεια) Messinia
Sperchogeia or Sperchogia is a village and seat of the Community of Sperchogeia, of the Municipality of Kalamata, in the Regional Unit of Messinia.[2] It has a population of 825 inhabitants, according to the 2011 Census[3] and is located northwest of Kalamata, from which it is 8 kilometers away. Its old name during the Ottoman Empire was Kourtsaousi and it took its current name in 1867.[4]
Information
The oldest name of the village is the product of folklore and the so-called paratsoukia - nicknames that the Greeks gave, either to tease someone, or to emphasize their status. Thus, the word "Kourtsaousi" was given during the years of the Ottoman Empire, assuming that the Supreme Turkish Commander - Pasha, was lame. Koutso and tsaousis gave us this name.
The modern name Sperchogeia - Sperchogeia means two different things. First, downhill terrain, which is true because Sperchogeia is built at the foot of a mountain and secondly from the verb "spercho" which means sharp - dynamic movement forward. The second name can be well documented, because during the Ottoman Empire, it was a powerful Governorship due to its geographical location and altitude, which made it a strategic observatory.[5]
Sperchogeia is today a settlement and community of the enlarged Municipality of Kalamata, presenting in recent years an increase in population and the creation of new settlements around the center of the village and mainly to the north. Its inhabitants are also engaged in livestock farming, as well as agricultural crops. Olives, olive oil and the cultivation of the fertile Messinian plain are the occupation of many. It is located at an altitude of 53 meters.[6]
Women's Association of Sperchogeia
There are two associations, one is the Women's Association of Sperchogiea,[7] essentially the Cultural Association that undertakes the festive events and all kinds of social events. It also carries out charitable fundraisers and represents the Guardians' Association of the Primary School of Sperchogiea.
Sports Club of Sperchogeia
The other Association is the Sports Club of Sperchogeia, known as A.O.S.[8] The pride of the Sperchogia people is the football team with a long tradition and very good performances in the championship of the A' Local Category of Messinia. Dances of the year, parties, songs, official dances, etc. are organized every year by the club.
The Sperchogeia Athletic Club,[9] is a team with history, with mainly local football players and with a passionate fan base that fills the beautiful Sperchogia Football Stadium. It has been declared Messinia Champion twice in its history and has competed once in the Messinia Cup final.
Sperchogia Stadium
The Sperchogeia Stadium,[10] is a real gem for the village and the surrounding area, featuring high-standard plastic turf, a covered stand with a capacity of 200 seats, modern changing rooms for athletes, referees and parking spaces for fans' vehicles.
Administrative changes
21-04-1835, the settlement of Kourtsaousi is annexed to the Municipality of Thouria.[11]
10-07-1867, the settlement of Kourtsaousi is renamed to Sperchogeia.[12]
31-08-1912, the settlement of Sperchogeia is detached from the Municipality of Thouria and designated as the seat of the Community of Sperchogeia.[13]
04-12-1997, the settlement of Sperchogeia is detached from the Community of Sperchogeia and annexed to the Municipality of Kalamata.[14]
