Sistrouni (Σιστρούνι ) Ioannina

Sistrouni, officially Sistrounion, is a semi-mountainous village in the former province of Dodoni in the prefecture of Ioannina in Epirus at an altitude of 440 meters[1][2].

Geographical features - attractions

Sistrouni is located in the southwest of the prefecture near the border with the prefecture of Thesprotia. It is built at the foot of the Soulio Mountains[2], near one of the two tributaries that form the Acheron River in Polystafylo, Preveza. This tributary is called Strouniotikos and its name comes from the local name of the village as S'trouni. Sistrouni is 49 km. SW. from Ioannina and 40 km. NW. from Filippiada[3]. In the center of the village is the parish church of Agios Vasilios, built in 1876, and its bell tower (1910). The hagiographies on the wooden iconostasis of the church date back to 1884[4]. There is also a Folklore and Historical Museum of the Souliotes Association and a photography exhibition[2].

In the area there are many monuments and sights that indicate its continuous habitation, such as:

ruins of a Hellenistic period acropolis (4th century) at the location "Agios Ioannis" which has been designated with the YA 15794/19-12-1961 - FET 35/B/2-2-1962 historical monument and archaeological site[5]. It has been used as a castle by the Romans, the Byzantines and the Souliotes. Inside there are underground vaulted catacombs and a circular stone water tank[2].
the watermill which is the property of the I. M. Metamorphosis of Sotiras Romanos. It is a two-story stone building on the ground floor of which the equipment and machinery (millstone, millstone, etc.) are located, while on the first floor the miller's residence. With the YA YPPO/DILAP/G/1642/34908/23-6-1992 - FET 493/B/30-7-1992 it has been declared a historical monument[6].

the springs of Acheron in Lakka Souli or "original springs of Acheron" at the northern exit of the village towards Bestia and Ardosi. The area is next to the western banks of the Strouniotikos River, is overgrown with plane trees, walnut trees, olive trees, wild rose bushes and here is the Holy Monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. There are also the Two Bridges, newer constructions of 2008, which bridge the Acheron River at its sources[7].

Holy Monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary

The monastery is considered one of the oldest monasteries of Dodona with its dating estimated around 1156. The current construction is newer and was built after a destruction that occurred for unknown reasons. The church is a three-aisled basilica with a dome, has an external stone-built loggia and is surrounded by a stone-built enclosure. Inside the church there are six columns that divide it into three aisles and it is decorated with remarkable frescoes. Particularly interesting are the Virgin Mary enthroned with Christ in her arms and the Dormition of the Virgin Mary[8]. In 1994, with the YMPO/ARCH/B1/F33/47155/1033/17-11-1994 - FET 909/B/8-12-1994 it has been characterized as "ancient monument, with a protection zone of 150 m. around the perimeter of the monastery enclosure"[9].

Name - historical elements

Sistrouni historically and culturally belongs to the 27 villages of "Lakka Souli" or "Lakkochori" and in particular to the 14 of "Lakka Botsari", as they were named during the period of Turkish rule in honor of the hero of 1821, Markos Botsari, who lived in the area for a time (see Paleochori Botsari)[10].

Battle of Sistrouni

On June 9, 1800, a battle was fought in the area of Sistrouni between the Souliotes and the troops of Ali Pasha. After an ambush set up by Fotos Tzavelas and other Souliote leaders, they trapped the Turks who had camped in the village and inflicted heavy losses on them. The following days, the Battle of Vyrtzacha followed, in the "Livadi" area of present-day Zotikos[11][12]. The historian and fighter of 1821 Christoforos Perraivos reports:

"The Souliotes decided to thwart the Pasha's purpose, if possible, with a force of two hundred fellow citizens, whose leaders were: Fotos Tzavellas, Gogkas Daglis, Skoumbos Drakos, Koliodimetris, Kitsos Panomaras, Paschos Lalas and Tzalas", all of whom lay in ambush that same night on the most fortified place near the village, while their leader, Turkalbanos (Mustafa Zigouris), having one thousand three hundred chosen soldiers under his command, unsheathed his sword and rushed headlong against the two, following him at the same time and the entire body by the usual means of the crowd, but unexpectedly falls into the ambush of the Souliotes, where at first more than thirty of them are killed by gunfire, in addition to the wounded.

The stratagem and the agreed damage may not have been enough to secure victory, if the Chief Tzavellás had not premeditated to kill General Zigurin, leading the soldiers..."[13]

Administrative

In 1919, with the Government Gazette 184A-19/08/1919, the community of Sistrouni was established, based in the homonymous settlement, whose name was corrected in 1928 to Sistrouni[14]. According to the Kallikrates plan, it is the community of Sistrouni, which belongs to the municipal unit of Lakka Souli, in the municipality of Dodoni, in the Regional Unit of Ioannina, and according to the 2011 census, has a population of 303 inhabitants[15].
