Sinevro (Σινεβρό) Achaia

Sinevro is a village in Achaia and belongs to the Municipality of Aigialeia. It is located on the banks of the Krios River, just above Svirou and at an altitude of approximately 550 meters, with its houses scattered over two levels (neighborhoods). It has a population of 38 inhabitants according to the 2011 census.

Historical data

Residents

According to census data, in 1851 the village was inhabited by 173 people. In the following years, the population fluctuation followed a steady downward trend. Thus, in 1879 the inhabitants decreased to 166. In 1896 they were 121. In 1920, 30 people lived in the village. In 1928, the population more than doubled to 77.

The large demographic change between the 1907 and 1920 censuses is due, according to local accounts, to the movement of residents to fields that were granted to them for cultivation in the village of Dimitropoulos in the wider region of Aigio[2].

An Armenian community has been thriving in the village in recent decades, and a church has also been built[2].

Name

The tradition that refers to how the village got its name is also noteworthy. In ancient times, there was a large forest in the area and many animals lived there, including deer. Because the newborn fawn was called “nevros” and the first residents of the area encountered many small “nevros” in the vicinity, they named their settlement “Sy-nevros”[3]. This name remains to this day. It is one of the few villages in the region that did not change its name during the 1950s.

Although the spelling Sinevro has prevailed in official documents[4], historical sources record it as Synevro.

According to other, local, testimony, there is the view that the name derives etymologically from the word "synevros" as a point that was a meeting place, however, this etymology does not match the spelling "Sinevro"[2].

Administrative development

On 20/04/1835 the village was annexed to the Municipality of Felloi until 1912 when, with the Government Gazette 256A of 28/08/1912, when the municipalities were abolished, it became the seat of the homonymous community[5][6]. With the Government Gazette 119A of 03/06/1944 it was detached from the District of Kalavryta, which it belonged to until then, and was annexed to the District of Aigialeia[5]. With the Government Gazette 244A of 04/12/1997 and the implementation of Kapodistrias, it ceased to be a community and the village was subordinated to the Municipality of Aigeira[5][6]. With the Government Gazette 87A of 07/06/2010 and the implementation of Kallikratis it was subordinated to the Municipality of Aigialeia[5].

Demographic evolution

In 1700 it is mentioned in the Venetian census Grimani as Sviru e Screveno, i.e. it is enumerated together with the village of Svirou, and has a population of 7 families (33 inhabitants)[2].

The demographic evolution of the village according to the national censuses[7][8] is as follows:
