Simantra (Σήμαντρα) Chalkidiki
Simantra (or Karkara) is a town and the homonymous Municipal District in the Municipality of Nea Propontis in the Prefecture of Halkidiki. In fact, it is the largest Municipal District in the Municipality, after Nea Moudania. Its location is at the foot of Lostritis. According to the 2011 population census, it has 2,421 residents. The settlement has two kindergartens, a 9-place Primary School, a Middle School, a High School and culturally active are the cultural club called "Folklore", the ''Women's Association of Simantra'' as well as the "City of Simantra". From an athletic point of view, the AO Simantra team[1], the local football championship of the Halkidiki Football Association, is active in the first amateur category. The main occupations of the inhabitants are trade and agricultural professions.
Historical information
The village is another refugee village in Halkidiki. In particular, part of the inhabitants of Sementere (Simantra) in Cappadocia, hence the current name of the village, settled in the settlement that was formerly called Karkara[2]. In Cappadocian Simantra, the beloved of the inhabitants of the village, Saints Efstratios, Afxentios, Eugenios, Mardarios and Orestes, also lived, pieces of whose relics are kept in the Holy Church of the village, dedicated to the Holy Twelve Apostles. However, the greater part of the relics of the Five Martyrs is kept in Polystylos in Kavala, where the rest of the population ended up. [3] More information about Simantra in Cappadocia can be found in the book "Modern Greek in Asia Minor: a study of the dialects of Siĺli, Cappadocia and Pharasa, with grammar, texts, translations and glossary", Richard McGillivray Dawkins, William Reginald Halliday, University Press, 1916. The book is available in electronic format on the Google Books page.[4] Approximately two and a half kilometers east of Simantra, the site of a Roman settlement was identified, based on surface pottery, which administratively belonged to the Roman colony of Cassandria.[5] Also, with the sponsorship of Simantra residents living in America, projects such as the Elementary School and the Gymnasium were carried out. In addition, an invaluable benefactor was Gerasimos Hanos, who created with his own money the local Municipal Stadium ''Gerasimos Hanos'', which is now home to the village team.
Language, culture and customs
At a scientific conference in 2005, it was reported that the village is inhabited by speakers of the Cappadocian dialect, which was considered extinct since the 1960s. Furthermore, of interest from a cultural point of view are the commemorations for the lost homelands, which take place every year at the end of July. The events are characterized by dancing, songs and photography exhibitions. Carnival events also take place during the three-day period of Carnival. The latter culminate with the parade of chariots in the village square with the participation of a large crowd, which takes place on Clean Monday.
