Sidironero (Σιδηρόνερο) Drama
Sidironero[1] (before 1927 Osenitsa[2]) is a village and former community in the Drama Regional Unit of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. Since 2011 it has been part of the Municipality of Drama, of which it is a municipal unit.[3]
General and historical information
It is located in the Rhodope Mountains along the Bulgarian border in the northern part of the Drama Regional Unit between the municipalities of Kato Nevrokopi and Paranesti. Its area is 351.273 km².[4]
The municipal unit is subdivided into two local communities (constituent villages are listed in parentheses):
Sidironero (Kallikarpo, Oropedio, Pappades, Sidironero)
Skaloti
At the 2021 census, the population of the municipal unit was 239 inhabitants, of which 198 in Sidironero.[5]
On June 14, 1944, Sidironero became a battlefield between the Bulgarian Occupation troops and the guerrilla groups of Anton Tsaous.[6]
