Sidirochori (Σιδηροχώρι) Kastoria
Sidirochori is a settlement in Western Macedonia in the Regional Unit of Kastoria.[1]
General information
Sidirochori is built at an altitude of 1,040 meters on the slopes of Mount Vernos[1] and is one of the most mountainous villages in Macedonia. Sidirochori belongs to the municipality of Kastoria[2] and its population according to the 2011 census is 82 inhabitants.[3] Until 1928 it was called Sistevo.[2] The sacred post-Byzantine church of Agios Nikolaos, a three-aisled basilica from 1813, has been declared a historical monument by the Ministry of Culture.[4]
Historical data
From Sistevo was the revolutionary Nakos of the Macedonian Revolution of 1896 who played an important role in the subsequent Macedonian Struggle.[5] Another important Sistevo Macedonian fighter was Athanasios Navatsis of Constantine who was killed in Teicholista (Toichio)[6].
