Geography

Seta is located in a mountainous setting near the heart of the island. The mountains around Seta are covered with forests and of pine and spruce trees. Farmlands are located in the lower areas. Seta is connected by the Greek National Road 44 to Thiva, Chalkida, Eretria, and Karystos.

History

Seta joined the country of Greece after the end of Ottoman rule. After being damaged in World War II and the Greek Civil War, its buildings were rebuilt. Many inhabitants have left for larger towns and cities in Greece and around the world.

A travelogue titled Travelling in Greece (Menoume Ellada) was filmed in Seta in late 2006.

The forest fires of 2007 ravaged Seta and Kato Seta (the entire municipal district) on August 25 and August 26 of that year. Much of the forest was in flames and was ruined; some parts were unaffected. The village suffered moderate damage and its residents were stranded. Many fought the fire along with the firefighters, fire trucks and planes that came from other parts of Europe. The fire lasted several days. Since that time, repairs are being undertaken throughout almost the entire municipality.
