eography - History

Semeli is located on the border with the Regional Unit of Kavala and the northwestern edge of the Xanthi plain at an altitude of 120 meters[2]. It is 18 km. N. from Evlalo (seat of the municipality), 12 km. SW. from Xanthi and 43 km. E.-NE. from Kavala. Southwest of the village are Toxotes, south of Mikro and Megalo Tympano, further south passes the Xanthi - Kavala National Road and northeast is Petrochori. It is considered one of the recently abandoned settlements of Xanthi whose Pomak inhabitants gradually moved but return in the summer months.[3] During the period of Turkish rule, it was referred to as Foutsourlou[4] and officially, after the liberation of Thrace, in 1924, it was named Semeli in the Government Gazette 194A - 14/08/1924, annexing it to the then community of Toxotes.[5] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, it belongs to the municipal community of Toxotes, which falls under the Municipality of Topeiros, and according to the 2011 census, 27 residents were registered.[6] while the censuses of its inhabitants were:[7]

Census 1928 1940 1951 1961 1971 1981 1991
