Roda (Ρόδα) Kerkyra

Roda Esperion or Karousadon is a village near the northern coast of Corfu [1].

Geography - History

Rhoda is 38.5 km NW. from the city of Corfu and is located between Acharavi E and Sidari W. It is officially mentioned as a settlement in 1981 in the then community of Karousades [2]. According to the Kallikratis plan and after its amendment in 2019, together with Agios Ioannis, Astrakeri and Karousades, they constitute the municipal community of Karousades, which belongs to the municipal unit of Esperia of the municipality of North Corfu [3] and according to the 2011 census has population 89 inhabitants [4].

The area was inhabited in antiquity, as evidenced by several building remains. The remains of a Doric temple of classical times, west of the modern settlement, are the most important find of the site. In 1939 the Archaeological Society excavated a Doric temple pavilion (6 x 11) and brought to light the platform as well as parts of its roof, e.g. cornice with written decoration, clay anthems and marble capes. The temple dates back to the 5th century BC. century. In 1930, the then Superintendent of Antiquities, Ioannis Papadimitriou, located columns of the temple in the area named "Agios Georgios ton stylon", from where other spolia were used in modern buildings in the settlement of Rhodes. In 1939 the Archaeological Society, headed again by Papadimitriou, carried out the first excavation at the site during which the platform, the walls and important parts of the superstructure of the church came to light. In 1967, during excavations of the Archaeological Service under the Superintendent George Dontas, the rectangular altar east of the church was located.

Many of the findings of the excavations are on display at the Corfu Archaeological Museum.
