Raftanaioi (Ραφταναίοι) Ioannina
Raftanaioi is a small mountainous village in the Prefecture of Ioannina, it is the seat of the homonymous local community, and according to the "Kallikratis Program" since 1/1/2011 it belongs to the Municipality of Northern Tzoumerka[1]. During the period 1997-2010, based on the "Kapodistrias Plan", it belonged to the former Municipality of Pramanta as the seat of the former municipal district of the same name[1][2].
Location
The village is built at an altitude of approximately 956 meters in the northwestern foothills of Tzoumerka. It is located in the southern, southeastern part of the Prefecture of Ioannina, right on the administrative border with the Prefecture of Arta. The villages of Ambelochori (Skloupo), Ktistades and Pramanta are located close to it, being approximately 6, 7 and 11.5 km away from them, respectively. It is 48.5 km from Ioannina and 57 km from Arta.
To the south of the village and near the settlement of Plaka is the famous single-arch traditional stone Bridge of Plaka[3], on the Arachthos River, whose central arch collapsed on February 1, 2015, following heavy rainfall[4]. Since 1971, it has been declared a work of art requiring special protection because "it is one of the largest and most beautiful in Epirus, erected in 1868"[5].
Next to the village and to its west is the chapel of Prophet Elias, at an altitude of 1,208 meters, overlooking the mountains of Souli, the Greek-Albanian border (Nemertsika or Dousko), the Chouliarades ridge and the Amvrakikos Gulf[6].
Demographic evolution
The demographic evolution of the settlement in the 21st century is as follows:
Year Population
2001 45[7]
2011 47[8]
Other data
The village is ecclesiastically affiliated with the Holy Metropolis of Arta; the village's parish church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary[9].
