Pyrra (Πύρρα) Trikala
Pyrra is a mountainous village in the prefecture of Trikala. It is built at an altitude of 1,000 meters on the slopes of southern Pindos and is one of the most mountainous settlements in the prefecture of Trikala. It falls administratively under the Municipality of Pyli and its population according to the 2011 census is 19 inhabitants.[1]
General and historical information
Pyrra is one of the Vlach villages in the Aspropotamos region.[2] Historically, it is first recorded in the Ottoman census of 1454/1455 as the property of the spahis from Trikala[3], while its name is of Greek origin[4].
During the late 18th century and early 19th century, the settlement was effectively controlled by the powerful Pyrgiota family, while many of Pyrra's residents worked as itinerant craftsmen.[5] Shortly afterwards, Pyrra (like several of the villages in the wider area) became a tsifliki (estate) of Ali Pasha.[6]
In 1806, the French traveler F. Poukeville reported that 200 families lived in the settlement. However, in 1820, the Code of Trikki, compiled by order of Ali Pasha for tax purposes, recorded only 75 families.[7] During the Greek Revolution, Pyrra was destroyed in 1823 by the troops of the Albanian chieftain Silichtar Bonda who had invaded Aspropotamos. The devastation of the period led some of the inhabitants of Pyrra to decide to flee to the newly established Greek state, where they settled mainly in the area of Thebes.[8] In 1881, Pyrra was annexed, along with most of Thessaly, to Greece.
Sights of the village are the remains of the monastery of Prophet Elias or Agios Modestos (1859), the church of Agios Nikolaos dating from the 17th and 18th centuries[9] and the church of Agia Paraskevi (1892).[10] Furthermore, near Pyrra is the Sarmanitsa cave.[10]

Administrative changes
In 1883, the settlement of Pyrra with a population of 137 residents was annexed to the municipality of Ethika, with the seat being the settlement of Tyrna, today's Elati.[11]
In 1912, the settlement of Pyrra, due to having its own communal property and an annual income of over 2,000 drachmas, was detached from the municipality of Ethika and designated as the seat of the newly established homonymous community.[24]
In 1997, with the implementation of the Kapodistrias program (law 2539/97), the settlement was annexed to the municipality of Ethika.[25]
In 2010, with the implementation of the Kallikrates program (law 3852/2010), the settlement was detached from the abolished municipality of Aithika and annexed to the municipality of Pyli.[26]
Today, after the last change in 2010 (Kalikrates program), it falls under the municipal unit of Aithika of the municipality of Pyli of the regional unit of Trikala.
