Platanos is a settlement in Central Macedonia in the Regional Unit of Imathia.[1][2]

Geographical - Historical information

Platanos is located on the border with the Regional Unit of Pieria, in the Aliakmonas plain and near the northern banks of the river at an altitude of 7 meters. It is approximately 8 km. SE. from Alexandreia (seat of the municipality), 44 km. N. from Katerini and 22 km. W.-SW. from Thessaloniki. To the northeast is Koryfi, to the east is Kleidi and to the south is Aiginio. To the west is the Piraeus-Thessaloniki railway line and to the south is the Egnatia Motorway. Its inhabitants are mainly engaged in agriculture (they grow cotton, beans, wheat, fruits, etc.).

It is officially mentioned, after the Balkan Wars and the liberation of Macedonia, in 1918 with the old name from the Turkish rule Tsinaforo, to be annexed to the then community of Koryfi. In 1949 with the Government Gazette 302A - 31/10/1949 it was designated the seat of the homonymous newly founded community and in 1954 with the Government Gazette 91A - 30/04/1954 it was renamed Platanos.[3] According to the "Kallikratis" Program and its amendment Kleisthenes I[4] it constitutes the community of Platanos which falls under the municipal unit of Plateos of the Municipality of Alexandreia while according to the 2011 census 630 inhabitants were registered.[5]
