Platanaki (Πλατανάκι) Arkadia
Platanaki is a mountainous village in South Kynouria of the Peloponnese and the Regional Unit of Arkadia.[2]
Geographical - historical information
Platanaki is located on the slopes of Parnon at an altitude of 900 meters,[3] northeast of the peak Psari (altitude 1,839 m). It is 32 km. W. from Leonidio, 105 km. SE. from Tripoli (via Astros) and 58 km. E.-NE. from Sparta (via Vasaras). The village is built next to an area covered with fir trees, known since antiquity as Glyppia and inhabited by Achaeans. Its inhabitants, who move to the village of Vlachiotis in Laconia during the winter, are engaged in agriculture, beekeeping and construction work.[4] The Macedonian fighter Captain Foufas (Zacharias Papadas) was born in the village[5].
Sights
Northeast of the village, in the direction of Agios Vasilios, there are ruins of a medieval castle and the now ruined Monastery of Palaiopanagia. Fragments of vases have been found in the same location, while at the entrance to the catholicon of the old monastery there is part of an ancient statue.[6]
Sights of the village are the church of Panagia (Genesio Theotokou) which "dates back to the 19th century and is a single-nave, vaulted church with a three-sided sanctuary niche and an arched bell tower. Inside, it preserves a wood-carved iconostasis with fine art icons from post-Byzantine times"[7] as well as the stone-built three-crown fountain of 1889 (renovated in 1953) which is considered "a remarkable construction with strong architectural elements of neoclassicism and is connected to the memories of the inhabitants of the area"[8]. Both have been declared historically preserved monuments.
Administrative information
It is officially mentioned as a settlement, after the liberation, in 1835, when it was annexed to the then municipality of Glypia. In 1912, with the Government Gazette 252A - 24/08/1912, it was designated as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name.[9] According to the Kallikratis plan, it constitutes the local community of Platanaki, which belongs to the Municipality of South Kynouria and according to the 2011 census has a population of 72 residents.[10]
