Platana (Πλατάνα) Evoia
Platana or Kato Potamia (until 1966) is a seaside village in the municipality of Kymi-Aliveri in the Regional Unit of Evoia. According to the 2011 census, it has 384 inhabitants. It is built at an altitude of 20 m[2] at the mouth of the Melas or Stotini stream in the Gulf of Kymi.
Historical information
The first buildings of the settlement were shipyards built by the residents of Ano Potamia. In 1875, the Hellenic Mining Company, which had undertaken the exploitation of the lignite mine at Entzi since 1870, built a pier at the mouth of the Melas for the unloading of lignite onto ships, known as a mouragio. The pier was connected to the mines by a horse-drawn railway. Shortly afterwards, the building of the mine manager, known as the palataki, was built. Other buildings followed, built on both sides of the river. In 1911, it was first recorded as a settlement, under the name Kato Potamia.[3]
In 1914, the port in Kymi was completed and the ore was now unloaded there. This marked the beginning of a period of decline for Platana, as the wine trade began to decline. In 1935, the bridge connecting the two banks of the river was completed. Until then, communication had been by boat. The village began to develop again after the 1980s, this time as a tourist destination.[3]

Points of interest
Some of the 19th century stone mansions, made of characteristic red stone, have survived to this day. Two of the village's buildings have been designated monuments. One is a ground-floor building with remarkable architectural and morphological elements and the other is a two-storey building on the coastal front of the settlement.[4]
Of interest is the mole or mouragio, which was built in 1875 for the unloading of lignite from the mines at Entzi. Of interest are the mouths of the Melas stream, where a bridge was built in 1935. The village also has a beach.[3]
Economy
The village's economy is now based on tourism. There are many rooms to rent and restaurants in the village. There is also a fishing shelter in the village.[3]
