Pigadia (Πηγάδια) Xanthi

Pigadia is a settlement in the Municipality of Avdira, Xanthi Regional Unit. It is located 9 kilometers southeast of Xanthi.[1] Its population is 511 inhabitants (2011).

History

The settlement was built by refugees who arrived in the area from Hadzigyri of Kessani in Eastern Thrace.[2] Many of the customs of Hadzigyri are still kept in the village today, such as the custom of the godfather on Epiphany Day. The children run around the village holding icons, then they share bread rolls, one of which has a cross inside. Whoever is lucky enough to win it the following year treats his fellow villagers to a ceremonial table.
