Pente Pigadia (Πέντε Πηγάδια) Preveza
Pente Pigadia of Preveza (formerly Briga[1]) is a settlement in the Municipality of Ziros of the Regional Unit of Preveza in the Region of Epirus. According to the 2011 census, its population is 47 inhabitants[2].
General and historical information
Pente Pigadia is located at the western foothills of Xirovouni, approximately 25 km. north of Arta. Until the First Balkan War (1912-1913), it belonged to the Ottoman Empire. During the Ottoman occupation, the wider area was an important passage on the Arta-Ioannina road, with an inn and tolls with an armed guard. As a result, various battles took place in the years 1821, 1897 and 1912, centered on the strategically important castle of the same name.
It was officially recognized as a settlement in 1961, while in 1971 it received its current name. Administratively, until 1997 it belonged to the community of Kleisoura. Then it was subordinated to the Kapodistrian Municipality of Filippiada, while since 2011 it belongs to the Kallikratis Municipality of Ziros[1].
Points of interest
The main attraction of the village is the preserved castle of Pente Pigadia, which is reported to be a building of the early 19th century during the reign of Ali Pasha. At the same time, the ruins of an older castle, built during the reign of Kourt Pasha, are preserved nearby[3].
