Pefki (Πεύκη) Trikala
Pefki (during the Turkish occupation, Strouza) is a mountainous village in the prefecture of Trikala[2], in the Municipality of Meteora[3], while it was formerly part of the Municipality of Malakassi[4]. It is located at an altitude of 850m. surrounded by the pine forests (hence its name) of Lazina, Kanalia and Brava. It is 35 km. from Kalampaka and only 2,500 m. from the Trikala-Ioannina National Road. On the lower side of the village is the river that comes from Korydallos where the arched bridge that exists there has served the Thessaly-Epirus transport since the beginning of the 19th century. The inhabitants, who number about 300, are of Vlach origin and are more involved in livestock farming and agriculture and less in logging.
The village
In the center of the village there is the square with the huge plane tree that has been providing shade to the residents and visitors of the village for many years. Around the square are the village cafes, the church of Agios Nikolaos, the old school and the fountain with running water from the well. In 2017, the Folklore Museum of Pefki was inaugurated, which through its exhibits represents the lifestyle, traditions and jobs of its residents. The daily operation of the renovated watermill (Moara) and the water mill (Dristela) is also noteworthy. Pefki also has a cultural association, which since 2014 has been organizing and participating in various cultural events, the most important of which is the annual village festival on August 14. There are also children's camps in the village, but they are no longer operating.
History
Pefkis has a rich history throughout the decades, however, the historical event that has marked it is the two arson attacks by the Germans, in 1943 and on July 17, 1944. The second time, they also took all the men over 15 years of age hostage and took them to Germany, while they gathered the women and children in the church of Agios Nikolaos to burn them. Miraculously, on the day of Agia Marina, the burning was suspended and thus they were saved. For this reason, the residents built the church of Agia Marina in 1989 and every year on her feast day (July 17) they celebrate.
