Partheni (Παρθένι) Arkadia

Partheni (or Bertzova or Verzova) is a semi-mountainous village near the border with Argolida. The road access to the village is made from the Strait on the national road that connects Tripoli with Argos (distance 4 km). It also has a station on the railway line that connects Argos with Tripoli. It is built at the foot of Mount Parthenion in Arcadia at an altitude of 850m. In front of him lies the homonymous plain. The village, together with the nearby villages of Steno, Agiorgitika, Zevgolatio, Neochori and others, is today the Municipality of Korythio.

Partheni is characterized by traditional, large or small stone houses, from the train station to the cafe. And this Arcadian village has experienced abandonment in recent years by many of its inhabitants, many of whom immigrated to America and Australia. Today it has less than 400 inhabitants engaged in agriculture, viticulture and animal husbandry.

In the village stands out the church of Agios Georgios, which is decorated with modern frescoes. In the square, through the centuries-old plane trees, the old school dominates, which now functions as a Cultural Center. Of particular interest is the ruined chapel of Agios Theodoros which is built inside the plain.

The folklore museum is also interesting, where one can see many objects that show the traces of the tradition of the area. Woven fabrics, embroidery, agricultural tools, jewelry, clothing and decorative items of the house. There are also documents and letters with texts concerning the tradition and history of the area.

Very close to Partheni is the hill Mouhli, a branch of Mount Partheni. During the Byzantine period there was a Byzantine fortress and city on the west and southwest side of the mountain. The fortress was captured and destroyed by the Turks in 1460 AD. In the area one can also see the ruins of the church of the Assumption of the Virgin, known as Panagia tou Mouchliou (Mouchliotissa). The most probable date of its construction is 1281 AD.

Partheni is known for its vineyards and very good wines. Local production is complemented by apples and cherries favored by local climatic conditions and the morphology of the area. In Partheni are two of the three sinkholes of Mount Parthenios and the natural flood control work of the Parthenioti plain and the wider region of Arcadia. Also the cave and the spring Pinikovi or Binikovi, at the eastern foot of the Parthenon, near the railway station of Ahladokambos, from where the water comes out of the sinkholes of the mountain and reaches Kiveri of Argolida.
