Pantanassa (Παντάνασσα) Rethymno

Pantanassa is a village in the prefecture of Rethymno. It belongs to the Municipality of Amari (formerly W. Syvritou) and is the only settlement of the homonymous municipal district. Pantanassa has 309 inhabitants based on the 2001 census.

The village took part in several revolutionary struggles. From Pantanassa came the chief Emmanuel Portalios, who sold half of his property for the liberation struggle against the Turks.

Also from Pantanassa was Stylianos Ieronymakis (Kapetanostelis), who killed the high-ranking Turk named Trikefalos in an area near Arkadi.
Most importantly, Pantanassa has played a leading role in the revolutions against the Turks and the Germans, but there has always been particular secrecy in all efforts by the villagers. Giorgos Mouzourakis and Strati Spyridaki had performed in the Cretan musical tradition.

In the village there are people who know old dances of Crete. Their music includes ριζιτικα, something we do not find in villages in the prefecture of Eastern Rethymno.

It borders the villages of Voleones and Patsos of the same municipality.

It is mentioned in the province of Amari in 1577 by Fr. Barozzi (fo27r) Pandanasso by Castrophylakas (K173) Andanasso with 273 cat. toponym. The 1834 census mentions Edanoso (Pashley, Travels In Crete, II, p. 314) with 8 Christians. and 7 Turkish families. In 1881, Antanassos is mentioned in the municipality of Merona, with 211 Christians. cat. and in 1900 Antanassos in the same municipality with 169 cat. In 1920 it is the seat of a homonymous community and Pantanassa is mentioned with 248 cat. in 1928 with 255, in 1940 with 281, in 1951 with 267, in 1961 with 243, and in 1971 with 173 cat. The place name Antanassos is prehistoric (See Memorandum of the Cretan History of Studies, "Cretan Chronicles", vol. I, p. 399). Therefore, it is not a surname of the Virgin Mary, that there is a church in the village with 101 doors and windows (according to Em. Lambrinaki, Geography of Crete, p. 111). Maybe it's a prehistoric settlement.
