Panaitolio (Παναιτώλιο ) Aitoloakarnania

Panaitolio, officially Panaitolion, is a lowland town and community of the Regional Unit of Etoloakarnania at an altitude of 67 meters.

Geography - Sights

Panaitolio is located just 5 km southeast of Agrinio and is almost connected to it. It borders Kainourgio (NE), the national road Antirriou - Ioannina (D.), Nea Avorani and Lake Trichonida. Its fertile plain begins near the foothills of Mount Panaitolikos and ends at the reeds of the lake. The main products are olives, corn and clover. With its well-built stone houses, it dominates the area of ​​Trichonida, on the outskirts of which are the "Ambaria", known for its fauna, flora and where in the past years the trade of eels and other fish had developed. The old pumping station was renovated through the European LIFE - NATURE Program 1999 and converted into a Trichonida Environmental Center. It has an exhibition space with thematic paintings, a model of Trichonida, an aquarium with fish from the lake, a screening room and a water quality analysis laboratory. In the same place there is an exhibition hall of the Women's Cooperative of Panaitolio with local products (pastries, trachana, noodles, etc.) [3].

Administratively

Panaitolio is officially mentioned after the liberation in 1835 with the name Mustafouli in the Government Gazette 19A - 07/12/1835 being attached to the then municipality of Thermo. In 1912, with the Government Gazette 261A - 31/08/1912, the seat of the newly established community of Moustafouli was designated. In 1928 with Government Gazette 81A - 14/05/1928 it was renamed Panaitolion [6]. According to the Kallikratis program, it is the local community of Panaitolio that belongs to the municipal unit of Thestiea of ​​the Municipality of Agrinio and according to the 2011 census it has 2,935 permanent residents [7].
