Palaioskamia (Παλαιοσκαμιά) Arta

Palaioskamia (Paleioskamia) or Palaioskamnia is a small coastal settlement in the Municipality of Arta with 36 permanent residents (2011 census), next to the Amvrakikos Gulf and belonging to the local community of Polydroso.[1]

According to the Kapodistrias Plan, Palaioskamia was until the end of 2010, a settlement of the newly established Municipality of Amvrakikos with its seat in Aneza. Based on the new administrative division provided for by the Kallikratis Plan, Palaioskamia was incorporated into the Municipality of Arta.[2] The settlement is approximately 17 kilometers from the city of Arta. Almost all residents are Vlach-speaking.

History

The first official mention of the settlement is in the 1981 census, which was published in the Official Gazette B' 370 - 14.06.1982 and informs us that the population of the settlement amounted to 69 residents.[3] In the early 1960s, the construction of new roads began and the asphalting of the main road connecting the city of Arta with Koronisia took place, as a result of which access to the city became easier. At that time, land was also distributed to Vlachs from Syrrakos, Ioannina, and Vathypedo, Ioannina, followed by permanent settlement in Palaioskamia. The area was not unknown to these populations because before the distribution of the land, they would come down from the mountains in the summer to graze their flocks.[4][5][6] Seraphim Xenopoulos of Byzantium, Metropolitan of Arta, in his "Historical Essay on Arti & Preveza" (published 1884), informs us that in the area near today's Palaioskamia, and specifically in the bay of Salaora, there was a ruined church dedicated to Saint Nicholas, and in 1814, by order of Ali Pasha of Ioannina, some families from Himarra settled there, but they abandoned the specific location after Ali Pasha was killed due to the swamp and malaria that plagued the area.[7]

Location and Access

Palaioskamia is adjacent to Polydrosso, Vigla and Aneza and is a short distance from the bay of Salaora in the Amvrakikos Gulf, and the distance from Koronisia is approximately 11 kilometers. A short distance away is the Vigla pumping station, a drainage project of the 1950s by a team of Dutch engineers.[8] It is connected by road to Arta via the Arta–Koronesia Provincial Road. Access from the settlement to the provincial road was possible until 2012 via the bridge at Maglara, but this was deemed unsuitable and access until 2014 could only be achieved via the bridge at the height of the pumping station. In the summer of 2014, the new Bailey-type bridge was opened to traffic, which is 28 m long and 3.81 m wide and allows the passage of vehicles with a gross weight of up to 15 tons.[9][10][11] The settlement is served by the Arta–Koronesia line of the Arta Urban Bus Service.[12] The village's residents attend church at the church of Agios Athanasios of Polydroso.

Demographics

Today, the population stands at 28 permanent residents (2021 census), showing a decrease compared to the 2011 census, where the population stood at 36 residents.[13]

Population fluctuations are reflected in the table below.[14]

Production and Employment

The residents' main occupation is livestock farming and agriculture with the main crops: corn and clover.
