Palaiochori (Παλαιοχώρι) Grevena

Palaiochori is a mountain village in the regional unit of Grevena at an altitude of 800 meters [1].

Geography - History

Palaiochori is located in the area of ​​Venzia in the prefecture of Grevena at a distance of 34 km from the city of Grevena and 45.5 km N.-ND. from the city of Kozani [2]. According to the plan, Kallikratis belongs to the municipal unit of Ventzi of the Municipality of Grevena and with the 2011 census it has 237 inhabitants [3]. It is a very old village that during the Turkish occupation was Kefalochori. The Code of Zavorda mentions many of its inhabitants as devotees of the Holy Monastery of Agios Nikanoros or Zavordas both in the period 1534 to 1692 (Bible) and in 1692 and later (Bible) [4]. Its inhabitants are engaged in animal husbandry and agriculture. In the past, many people also worked in the mines of Xerolivadou, 7 km from the center of the village.

Sights

In the village square stands the imposing church of Agia Paraskevi, a 1873 building with an independent bell tower of 1897 [5], which since 1995 has been described as "a monument in need of special state protection. It is a three-aisled wooden-roofed basilica with a gallery on the west and in parts of the south side, built in 1873. The monument is recorded with frescoes of 1874 "[6]. It is worth visiting "Havo", a natural beauty area with steep cliffs [7], a small lake and waterfall, the chapel of Prophet Elias with the open-air theater, the peak Analipsi (1,125m.), The peak Fakioli (1,110m .) and the area of ​​Meliatsko.

From time to time, notable artists have been hosted at the Palaiochori outdoor theater.
