Orio (Όριο) Evoia

Orio is a village in the municipality of Kymi-Aliveri in the Regional Unit of Evia. According to the 2011 census it has 388 inhabitants. It is built at an altitude of 40 m. [1]

Historical data

The site seems to have been inhabited since antiquity. In ancient times it was the border between the territories of ancient Kimi, Oichalia and Koilos, and from this event it retains its name to this day. During the Frankish rule in the village was the palace of the Frankish feudal lord. The mansion was located in Francesco, west of the village school. Near the village was a castle, known as La Koupa. [2]

The Ottomans, led by Mohammed II, captured this fortress of Kupa after a betrayal in 1470 and demolished it. [2] The village is mentioned in the Ottoman tax records of 1474 as Oryo. According to the store, it had 96 houses with 11 widows. The store also notes that it is also known as Potira and that it has a fortress. The 1521 report states that the number of households increased to 202. [3]

After the liberation, in 1833, the villagers had to buy them from the previous owners in order to acquire the fields around the village. In 1836 Orio was annexed to the municipality of Dystiaion, in 1848 to the municipality of Avlonos and with the abolition of the municipalities in 1912 a community seat was defined which also included the villages of Pyrgi and Mourteri, which were later detached from it.
