Olympoi (Ολύμποι ) Chios

Olympoi is a village in southwestern Chios, at a road distance of 31 km from the city of Chios. It used to be the seat of a community, while today it is one of the nine municipal districts of the Municipality of Mastichochoria. Olympoi is really one of the 22 or so villages in southern Chios where it is cultivated, there and nowhere else in the world, the mastic tree or mastic bearing (Pistacia lentiscus, var. Chia) from which Chios mastic is extracted.

Olympoi is built on a flat area, but not close to the coast. The nearest village is Mesta (3.5 km). The average altitude of the settlement is 120 meters above sea level, to which it has no view. In Olympoi, the form of the medieval "village-castle" is preserved, albeit to a lesser extent than in Mesta, enclosed by a wall formed by the walls of the outer houses themselves, which were joined together, as joined at height. on the first floor are the houses of the village, leaving below the internal streets to form small tunnels. The same form is preserved in the mastic villages of Elata and Pyrgi. It is due to the fear of pirates, who landed on the coast during the Middle Ages and until the Ottoman Empire, and raided villages to plunder mastic and their other products.

The inhabitants of Olympoi are called Limbousi in the local language idiom. The evolution of the Olympoi population in the official censuses is shown in the table.

The parish church (the "village church") of Olympoi is named after Agios Georgios. The church of Agia Paraskevi with its wood-carved iconostasis is remarkable, as well as the Bank of Olympoi, a two-storey building with long narrow halls that has been preserved since the Middle Ages in good condition.

In the area of Olympoi and at a distance of three kilometers from the village there is a small cave of the type of cavern (vertical dimension larger than the horizontal, about 57 meters deep), with remarkable natural decoration of stalactites, explored only in 1985 and began to be visited after the year 2000 during the summer season (early May to October).
