Nerofraktis (Νεροφράκτης) Drama
Nerofraktis is a lowland village of Eastern Macedonia in the Regional Unit of Drama.[1].
General and historical information
Nerofraktis is located in the plain of Drama at an altitude of 48 meters[2], 16 km south of the city, about 6 km east of Kalampaki (municipal seat) and 12 km southwest of Doxato. Its name during the Turkish occupation was Gedi Pere and its Muslim inhabitants, after the Asia Minor catastrophe and the Greek-Turkish population exchange of 1923, moved to Turkey, while 120 refugee families (493 people)[3] from Eastern Thrace - from the villages of Kiourtli and Haskio in the Kessani region as well as Loule - Burgaz in the Saranda Ekklision region initially came and settled in the village.
The residents are engaged in agriculture (producing corn, cotton, wheat, barley, beets and industrial tomatoes) and livestock (dairy cows, lambs, pigs and poultry). West of the village, there has been a large unit for trading, storing, drying cereals and producing compound animal feed since 1989.[4] Since 1982, the Folklore Association of Thracians of Nerofrakti has been operating, organizing many events, festivals and reviving the customs of the refugee residents such as: the food of Babos, the feast of Saint Mokios, the feast of the Ascension of the Lord, the reunion of the Thracians. The village has an amateur football club, Apollon Nerofrakti, which participates in local championships.[5]
Administrative information
After the liberation, it was officially referred to as Gedi Pere in 1919 in Government Gazette 251A - 20/11/1919 to be annexed to the then community of Kalampaki. In 1927, with Government Gazette 76A - 02/05/1927, it was renamed Nerofrakti and in 1934, with Government Gazette 48A - 03/02/1934, it was designated as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name.[6] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, it is the local community of Nerofrakto, which falls under the municipal unit of Kalampaki of the Municipality of Doxato and according to the 2021 census, it has a population of 446 residents.[7]
