Neokaisareia (Νεοκαισάρεια) Ioannina
Neokaesareia is a village in the prefecture of Ioannina in Epirus,[1] located 10 kilometers south of the city of Ioannina. Administratively, after the implementation of the Kallikrates Program, it falls under the Municipality of Ioannina, while until 2010 it belonged to the Municipality of Anatoli.[2]
General and historical information
The settlement was created after the population exchange of 1924 by Greek refugees who came from the villages of Zile, Karatzoren, Axos and Ai Kosten of Caesarea in Cappadocia, following the actions of - also a refugee - Eleftherios Hadjipetros[3][4]. In memory of their place of origin, the residents gave the settlement the name Nea Caesarea, which over the years was transformed into Neokaesareia[4].
The main church of the settlement is dedicated to Basil the Great and is located in the center of the village. On a small hill, next to the cemetery, there is also the first church built by the refugees when they settled in the area, the Holy Church of Taxiarches, which is celebrated solemnly on November 8.
