Nea Viniani is a mountainous village of Central Greece in the Regional Unit of Evrytania.[2]

Geographical - historical data

Nea Viniani is located in the center of the former prefecture at a distance of 7 km. SE. from Kerasochori (seat of the municipality), 31 km. NW. from Karpenisi and just 6 km. SW. from the historical Viniani. It is built on a small plateau with an altitude of 560 meters[3], on flat ground and a lush surrounding area. It was essentially created after the devastating earthquake of Evrytania (see The 1966 earthquake) which forced the residents of Viniani to abandon their village and several of them to move to "Livadia tis Viniani" as they called the location.[4] To the west passes the Tavropos (Megdovas) River, to the south the Karpenisi - Agrinio National Road, to the west the "Viniani - Marathias" Wildlife Refuge extends and to the north the Leptokarias stream.

Sights

To the northwest and near the village there is the stone single-arch bridge of "Katouna" which bridges the Leptokarias stream and connects Old and New Viniani.[5] To the east at a distance of approximately 5 km, after the hill of Prophet Elias is the stone single-arch bridge of Viniani which bridges the Megdovas and was formerly the only crossing of the river. It is believed that it was built in the second half of the 17th century.[6]

Administrative data

Nea Viniani as a settlement was first officially mentioned in 1971, being registered in the then community of Viniani.[7] According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Viniani, it forms the local community of Viniani, which belongs to the municipal unit of Viniani of the Municipality of Agrafa and according to the 2011 census has a population of 127 residents.[8]
