Excavation of an early Neolithic house in Nea Nikomideia in July 1963

The former Neolithic settlement of Nea Nikomideia is located about 2 km. It is one of the first known sites in Macedonia, dating from 6250-6050 BC, it may have had a population of up to 500-700.

It was extensively excavated in three phases (1961, 1963 and 1964) by R. J. Rodden and his team. The space it covers is an area of about 1,690 square meters, it has square houses with 12 meters. The houses of Nea Nikomideia were built - like most constructions in all Neolithic northern Greece from wood in a wooden frame. Objects discovered in the area include silicon fins, stone strings, clay figurines with cruciform eyes and suture-shaped noses, stamps for body decoration, a pendant in the shape of a steatite-shaped frog, and bone tools. Archaeologists excavating the ancient city have also discovered clay sculptures of women with folded arms. Ceramics were found in the area, especially large vessels, with a height of 60 cm and a capacity of 85 liters. The area was originally located on the shores of Thermaic Gulf or possibly in a lake or lagoon. As early as the 1930s, the swamp of Lake Giannitsa covered much of the area.
