Nea Mesolakkia (Νέα Μεσολακκιά) Serres

Nea Mesolakkia is a lowland village in the Serres Regional Unit[1] with an altitude of 18 meters[2].

Geography - History

Nea Mesolakkia is located towards the southwestern border with the Kavala Regional Unit. It is built east of the Strymonas River, at a distance of 14 km. SW. from Rodolivos, 52 km. SE. from Serres, 64 km. W.-SW. from Kavala and west of the village passes National Road 59 (Mesorrachis - Amphipolis). The village began to be inhabited in the mid-1960s and its residents were engaged in agriculture and tobacco cultivation. The village was known in the region for the superior quality of the tobacco it produced ("maxouli" according to the locals). At a distance of approximately 1 km. SE. is located the Tumvos Kasta, a circular hill in the area of ​​ancient Amphipolis in Macedonia[3].

Administrative

It was officially mentioned as a settlement in 1971 when it was registered in the then community of Mesolakkia[4]. According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Mesolakkia, it forms the Local Community of Mesolakkia, which falls under the Municipal Unit of Amphipolis of the Municipality of Amphipolis and according to the 2011 census has a population of 325 inhabitants[5]. In 2001, it had a population of 436 inhabitants, while during the administrative division of Greece with the Kapodistrias plan, until 2010, Nea Mesolakkia belonged to the Local Department of Mesolakkia, in the former Municipality of Amphipolis of the Prefecture of Serres.
