Nea Dafni (Νέα Δάφνη) Arkadia

Nea Dafni Gortynia (formerly: Dafni) is a small settlement in the community of Neochori in the municipality of Gortynia, which according to the 2011 census had 172 inhabitants while in 2001 it had 220 inhabitants. On the mountain opposite Nea Dafni is the old Dafni, a village that used to be flooded with people. Unfortunately, after an earthquake, the residents were forced to rebuild their houses and decided to build them at a lower altitude and next to the river Ladonas, so that there is a better harvest in the local crops. Palea Dafni (does not exist today) belonged to the community of Neochori and is located at the top of the Tzoukiza hill range. Little by little, over the years, Nea Dafni became a very beautiful village. In the past, there were laurels all over the village that adorned the village, but unfortunately they had to be cut down to make way for the new one. Another reason that the inhabitants of old Daphne landed in Nea Dafni is due to lack of transport and water, since 1956 the residents of Old Daphne have started their relocation to Nea Dafni. New Daphne in its current form, is a creation of the last 60 years. In Daphne there are other activities, such as earthmoving operations, supermarket, mini-market, butcher and catering shops (grill and ouzo), fire brigade, pasta factory, etc. And much more. In the villages of Arcadia you will find the local gruyere, feta, mizithra and handmade pasta, olive oil, honey and wine. It belongs to the local community of Nea Dafni which includes the villages of Nea Dafni, Bertsia, Trani Lakka, Neochorion. A little further out of the village is the "Koklama" bridge over the river Ladonas, which connects the western region of Irea and mainly Kato Irea with the rest of Gortynia.

Overview

The main occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture and animal husbandry. Landscape green with pines, cypresses, native plants and olive trees. The church of the village is the Holy Temple of Agios Charalambos, which belongs to the Holy Diocese of Gortyn and Megalopolis and the church of the old laurel is the Holy Temple of Agios Dimitrios. Near the village is the famous monastery of the Holy Zone. The village is the seat of the homonymous community

Name

According to the inhabitants, the name of the village comes from a goddess who lived in the village, the goddess Daphne.

Geography

The village is located 90 km from Tripoli and 40 km from Pyrgos. It is built at an altitude of 110 meters and the old laurel at an altitude of 560 meters, in the southern part of the village new laurel flows the river. The area has dense vegetation and many animals that come out of their nests to drink water from the river Ladonas. In the wider area there are many olive trees, due to the mild climate, the river Ladonas which is located nearby and the geological composition of the soil. The nearby forest of Kapeli was deforested and parts of it were given to the inhabitants for cultivation, a occupation that is currently limited due to the lack of labor. The landscape is complemented by greenery from the plains and plane trees as well as the river Ladonas. The sea can be seen from the village of old Daphne and has an incredible goddess. In the area and in the vast olive groves, if you go hiking, you will find in many places there are running water, rivers and small waterfalls.
