Myrtofyto (Μυρτόφυτο) Kavala
Myrtofyto (until 1928 Drezna[1]) is a village in the Municipality of Pangaio in the regional unit of Kavala, in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The municipal community of Myrtofyto, which also includes the settlement of Paralia Myrtofyto, according to the 2021 census had 395 residents, down from 433 in 2011. It is located at an altitude of 240 meters, at the foot of Mount Symvolo. The village had a Greek population in the early 20th century.[2] With the Kapodistrias program, it was incorporated into the municipality of Eleftheres and was formerly part of the community of Myrtofyto.[3]
The residents of the village are mainly engaged in viticulture, and export packaged grapes, while also bottling tsipouro in a modern distillery. The village is home to the Byzantine Church of Agios Athanasios, known for its iconostasis and hagiography.[4] At the site of Seinti Vrysi, on Mount Symvolo, there is a cave with finds of use from the Roman period.[5] In the village, the custom of burning the old year and welcoming the new is revived every year.[4]
