Mouzaki ( Μουζάκι) Messinia

Mouzaki[1][5] or Mouzakion,[2] is a village near Gargaliani and administratively falls under the Municipality of Trifylia, Messinia Prefecture.
Location

The village is located at an altitude of 460[1]-481[2] meters and is approximately 15 kilometers from the coast of the Ionian Sea. It is built at the foot of Agia, the second highest peak (1,066 meters) of the Aegaleon mountain range. Mouzaki has road access from neighboring villages, such as Pyrgos (Pyrgaki), Valta, Christianoupoli and Chora.

History
The village is mentioned in various censuses of the Venetian Pronoites of the Serene Republic of Venice, which were made during the thirty-year period (1683/84-1715), during which the Venetians occupied the Peloponnese. In 1689, Musachi belonged to the province of Arcadia (Kyparissia), which was one of the 4 provinces into which the Methoni district was divided (Phanari province, Arcadia province, Navarino province and Methoni province).[6] The settlement of Musachi was annexed to the old municipality of Keniri in 1835,[7][8] while in 1840 it was detached from the Municipality of Keniri and annexed to the Municipality of Flessiados.[9] The village is mentioned in 1853 in the second volume of "Hellenic" by Iakovos Rizos Ragavis as a village in the Municipality of Flesiados in the District of Trifylia with a population of 185 inhabitants, based on the 1851 census.[10] In 1899 the village was transferred from the Prefecture of Messinia and became part of the Prefecture of Trifylia,[11] for about a decade, until 1909, when it returned to the Prefecture of Messinia.[12] In 1912 the village was separated from the Municipality of Flesiada and designated as the seat of the community of Mouzaki, Trifylia.[13] It remained the seat of the homonymous community from 1912 until 1997, when, as part of the changes that occurred in local government through the "Kapodistrias" plan, it was subordinated to the abolished Municipality of Gargaliana,[14] while since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, it now belongs to the new Municipality of Trifylia.[1][15] This municipality was established with the Kallikratis Program by merging the pre-existing municipalities of Aetos, Avlona, Gargaliana, Kyparissia, Filiatra and the community of Tripyla.

Residents

The settlement, based on the 2011 census, has 321 permanent residents, who are mainly employed in various agricultural activities.[1]

The censuses of the Pronoites of the Serene Republic of Venice, Corner (1689), Grimani (1700) Angelo Emo (perhaps 1708), the undated census mentioned in the Querini-Stampalia manuscript (perhaps 1711), are four of the various Venetian censuses, which were attempted during the thirty-year period (1683/84-1715), during which the Venetians occupied the Peloponnese. To date, only the Grimani census has been fully published, by the historian and emeritus director of research at the National Research Foundation Vassilis Panagiotopoulos, in his work Population and Settlements of the Peloponnese. 13th - 18th Century (1985).
