Moni Yperageias Theotokou Atrou (Μονή Υπεραγίας Θεοτόκου Άτρου) Kefalonia
The Monastery of the Most Holy Theotokos of Atros[3] or Atros Monastery[4] is a monastery located in Kefalonia, near Poros, on the top of an impressive triangular hill just above the sea, at an altitude of 760 meters. It is approximately 42 km. E.-SE. from Argostoli and 6 km. NW. from Poros. It is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, celebrated on September 8, and is the oldest monastery in Kefalonia and a historical monument (Government Gazette 1123/B/29-8-2001).[3]
The monastery's catholicon is in the style of an Ionian basilica and was built in 1855. It suffered serious damage from the earthquakes of 1953 but was repaired and has survived to this day, maintaining its pre-earthquake style.[5]
History
The date of foundation, according to written testimony of the minutes of the Latin Diocese of Kefalonia, is estimated at 1264. However, according to older testimonies, it begins approximately in the 9th century. The Monastery was initially a male monastery, but around 1500 it was converted into a female monastery. Due to the fear of Turkish raids in the year 1598, the nuns abandoned the monastery and moved to the hinterland of Pronnoi. In the year 1600 it was re-established as a male monastery and has been maintained to this day.[3]
