The Monastery of Retha or Holy Monastery of Aretha or "Lady of the Swamp" is located in Central Greece and the borders of the Regional Unit of Aitoloakarnania with Arta in the Municipality of Amfilochia.[2][3]
General information
The monastery is approximately 31 km. N. from Amfilochia, 47 km. SE. from Arta and 74 N.-NW. from Agrinio. It is built on a hill of Mount Makrynoros at an altitude of 530 meters[4] and is the most important religious monument in the area of Valtos. Its foundation is likely in 1742, it is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and is celebrated on September 8 with the participation of believers from the entire surrounding area. The monastery's catholicon is a three-aisled (four-column) cross-roofed church with five octagonal domes and is a rare example of post-Byzantine architecture.[2][3]
Administrative data
It was officially registered as a separate settlement for the first time in 1928 in the then community.[5] According to the Kallikratis plan, it belongs to the community of Anoixiatikos, which falls under the Municipal Unit of Amfilochia of the Municipality of Amfilochia and according to the 2011 census, only 2 residents - monks - were registered.[6]
