  • Moires (Μοίραι ) Heraklion
  • Moires (also: Moirai) is a town and seat of the municipality of Phaistos in the Regional Unit of Heraklion with a population of 6,379 inhabitants, according to the 2011 census. Its distance from Heraklion is about 45 km. Its location is in the plain of Messara, at an altitude of 90 m. It is the seat of the Diocese of Gortyn and Arcadia. Among other things, there are 3 kindergartens, 2 Primary Schools (headquarters of the 4th Office of Primary Education), 1 High School, 2 Lyceums (including one EPAL), banks, KEP, post office, Health Center, justice of the peace, police station and radio station. The inhabitants are engaged in trade, business but more in agriculture. In the town are the churches of Agios Georgios, Agios Raphael, Agios Nektarios, Agia Paraskevi and Agios Konstantinos. In Kapariana there is also a church of Agios Georgios and Agios Myronas.

    Municipal Community of Moires

    The Municipal Community of Miron has a total of 6,496 inhabitants and consists of the seat and settlements of Agios Antonios, Xerokambia and Sfariana.

    Historical data

    Moires are not mentioned in the Venetian censuses or in the Turkish one of 1834. The settlement was first mentioned in 1881 with 83 Christians and 62 Turkish inhabitants. Until the last decades, apart from Agios Antonios (Vreli) and Kapariana, the municipality belonged to the 52nd km of the road to Tympaki, at an altitude of 90m. It had 77 inhabitants in 1971. In Kapariana there is a Primary School and a kindergarten.
