Mesimvria (Μεσημβρία) Evros
Mesimvria is a lowland village of Thrace in the Evros regional unit at an altitude of 60 meters[2].
Geographical - historical data
Mesimvria is located towards the borders with the Rhodope Regional Unit and the coast of the Thracian Sea.[3] It is 21 km. W. of Alexandroupolis and 48 km. SE. of Komotini. Southwest of the village and next to the sea is the archaeological site of Mesimvria - Zoni where an ancient colony of Samothrace has been identified, founded in the late 7th century BC. This city was initially thought to be Mesimvria, while subsequently Zoni, flourished in the 5th and 4th BC centuries. In the Macedonian and later Roman periods it began to decline although its habitation continued until the 6th century[4].
Administrative - population data
It is officially mentioned as a settlement, after the liberation, in 1924 in the Government Gazette 194A-14/08/1924, to be annexed to the then community of Makri.[5] According to the Kallikratis Plan, administratively, it falls under the local community of Makri, which belongs to the municipal unit of Alexandroupolis of the Municipality of Alexandroupolis and according to the 2011 census has a population of 145 residents[6].
