Melia is a semi-mountainous village of Thrace in the Evros Regional Unit at an altitude of 160 meters[1].

Geographical data - sights

Melia is located towards the border of Greece with Turkey, at a distance of 28 km. NE. of Alexandroupoli and 24 km. W. of the Kipon border station. To the south passes the Egnatia Motorway while to the west and south of the village begins the "Southern Evros Forest Complex" which has been recognized as a Natura2000 Biotope and is characterized by low hills covered by forests with oak, pine and reforestation[2][3]. Southeast of the village there are six windmills from the pre-industrial era that were in operation until the population exchange of 1925. Since 2000, through the European INTERREG program, four of them have been restored and the surrounding area has been transformed into a recreational area.[4] A religious attraction is the post-Byzantine church of Prophet Elias in the center of the village. It is believed that it was built in 1804 and its main feature is the twenty-one shallow blind domes arranged in three aisles.[5]

Administrative - population data

It is officially mentioned as a settlement, after the liberation, in 1924 in the Government Gazette 194A-14/08/1924, annexing it to the then community of Feres[6]. According to the Kallikrates Plan, administratively, together with Koila and Pylaia, it forms the municipal community of Pylaia, which belongs to the municipal unit of Feres of the Municipality of Alexandroupoli and according to the 2011 census has a population of 62 inhabitants[7]. The population censuses after World War II are:
