Mavromata (Μαυρομάτα) Evrytania
Mavromata[2] or Mavrommata is a mountainous village of Central Greece in the Regional Unit of Evrytania.[3]
Geography - History
Mavromata is built in the Evrytanika (southern) Agrafa at an altitude of 878 meters[4] and the southwestern foothills of Kopsi peak (altitude 1,940 m). It is 34 km NE. from Kerasochori (seat of the municipality), 60 km N.-NW. from Karpenisi. Of interest are the routes (and the location) to the neighboring Loggies to the southeast next to the Tavropos (Megdova) river as well as the abandoned settlements of Kyfos and Besia to the north.[2] According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Loggies, it forms the local community of Mavromata, which belongs to the municipal unit of Viniani of the Municipality of Agrafa and according to the 2011 census, as a community it has a population of 72 residents, while as a settlement it has 65.[5] As a settlement, it is officially referred to since 1836 as Elsani or Elsiani, being annexed to the then municipality of Agraion. In 1912, with the Government Gazette 261A - 31/08/1912, it was designated as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name. It was renamed Mavromata in 1928 with the Government Gazette 81A - 14/05/1928.[6]
