Mavriannos (Μαυριαννός) Ikaria
The Holy Monastery of the Annunciation of Mavrianos in Ikaria has been officially registered as Mavriannos since 1991[2][3][4]
Geographical - Historical data
The monastery is located on the west side of the island, towards the sea at an altitude of 67 meters[5] and is approximately 32 km W.-SW. from Evdilos while it is W.-SW. from Vrakades and N.-NE. from Amalos. It dates back to the late 18th century and it is likely that an ancient settlement or temple existed before due to the ancient architectural members that have been found (marble column base, marble and clay pieces). The iconostasis of the catholicon dates back to 1820, while the icon of the Virgin Mary bears the inscription “Most Holy Theotokos, guard the servant of God Paul and keep him under your protection. April 15, 1821.”[6]
It was officially mentioned as a separate settlement for the first time in 1991, when it was registered in the then community of Rachon.[3] According to the “Kallikratis” Program, it belongs to the community of Rachon, which falls under the municipal unit of Rachon of the Municipality of Evdilos, and according to the 2011 census, 7 monks were registered.[7]
