Mavranaioi (Μαυραναίοι) Grevena
Mavranaioi or Mavranei is a mountainous village in Western Macedonia in the Regional Unit of Grevena at an altitude of 770 meters[1].
Geographical - historical information
Mavranaioi is located on the slopes of Mount Orliaka, on the eastern borders of the Northern Pindos National Park and is approximately 10 km. SW. from Grevena. To the east of the village passes the Egnatia Odos, to the west the Velonia River (a tributary of the Venetikos) and to the southeast the Venetikos. In the Code of Zavorda, its inhabitants are mentioned as dedicators of the Holy Monastery of Agios Nikanoros or Zavorda both in the period 1534 to 1692 (A' Graph) and 1692 and after (B' Graph)[2]. It is the place of origin of the klephtarmatolos Papagiorgis or Deli (Ndelis) Papas, who was a relative of the Ziakai and fought the Turks in Metsovo, in the wider area of Smolikas around 1834 - 1854. The geographical location of Mavranaioi, between Macedonia and Epirus, in combination with the Aliakmonas and its tributaries that form a complex river network, imposed the construction of important roads such as the "Royal Street" on the Mavranei - Ziaka - Perivoli - Vovousa axis and the connection of the rivers with stone bridges which have survived to this day[3] and many of them have been designated as historically preserved monuments[4]. The Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Alexandra Sdoukou, is descended from the Mavranaioi.
Sights
The church of Agios Dimitrios has been classified as a historical monument since 1969[5]. It is a three-aisled basilica with a dome, which had a raised women's room on its western side. The frescoes that survive in the sanctuary, mainly on its northeastern and southeastern sides, date back to the 19th century[6].
Southeast of the village, after a geofence was constructed, a beautiful small lake has formed, approximately 15 meters deep. Beautiful hiking trails around Mavranei and in virgin nature are those that lead to the springs "Nik Pigadi", "Tselkos", "Pigadoulia", "Zivi", "Panagia-Prosokipia", "Agia Triada" of wonderful beauty and virgin nature. The neighboring peaks "Tabouri-Glykomeli", between Mavranei - Stavros, at an altitude of 920 m. and the "Emorfi Rachi" south of the village with an altitude of 850 m. have panoramic views of the area[7].
In Mavranaioi operates one of the three information centers of the Northern Pindos National Park with an exhibition space where the northeastern part of the park is presented with the central thematic axis of the Pindos National Park (Valia Kalda)[8].
