Matoneri is a settlement in Thessaly and the Trikala Regional Unit.[2][3] Until 1930, the official name of the settlement was Koklesi and previously Kouklaioi [4]
General information
Matoneri is located towards the western border with the Epirus Region, south of the Malakasiotiko stream on a densely vegetated mountain slope with an altitude of 840 meters.[5] It is approximately 57 km. W.-NW. from Trikala and 37 km. W.-NW. from Kalambaka (seat of the municipality). It is a Vlach village whose name comes from the location Άpa di okli (i.e. water of the eyes), where there was an icon of the Saints Anargyroi while the Metsovo-Trikala road used to pass through. The inhabitants are engaged in livestock farming and viticulture.[6]
It is mentioned, after the Union of Thessaly with Greece, in 1883 in the Government Gazette 126A - 02/04/1883 with the old name from the Turkish occupation as Kouklaioi being annexed to the then municipality of Kastaneas. In 1912 with the Government Gazette 261A - 31/08/1912 the name was corrected to Koklesi and in 1930 with the Government Gazette 251A - 24/07/1930 it was renamed to Matoneri.[7] In 1934 with the Government Gazette 395A - 15/11/1934 it was designated as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name. According to the program, Kallikratis is a community[8] that falls under the Municipal Unit of Kastania of the Municipality of Meteora and according to the 2011 census, 83 residents[9] were registered.
