Makrylia (Μακρυλιά) Lasithi
Makrylia is a settlement and the seat of the homonymous community of the municipality of Ierapetra, in the Lassithi Regional Unit of Crete. It is located 8 kilometers northwest of Ierapetra at an altitude of 260 meters.[1]
Historical information
Makrilia is mentioned by Francis Barokios in 1577 as Macilia in the province of Ierapetra and in the census of Castrofylakas in 1583 as Macriglia with 187 inhabitants. It is also mentioned by Francesco Basilicata in 1630 and in the Turkish census of 1671. In the Egyptian census of 1834 it had 10 families and in the census of 1881 it had 36 inhabitants, all Christians. Population trend according to censuses:[2]

Makrylia
It is officially mentioned in 1925 in the Government Gazette 27A - 31/01/1925 as the seat of the community of Makrylia.[4] According to the Kallikrates plan and the amendment of Cleisthenes I, it constitutes the community of Makrylia [5] which falls under the municipal unit of Ierapetra of the municipality of Ierapetra, while according to the 2011 census, 122 residents were registered.[6]

Sights
In Makrylia is the Monastery of Agios Antonios, in an area full of caves, monastic caves or sketes, as they are called. North of the Monastery there is a large skete with performances. During the Turkish occupation, a secret school operated there.
