Makrychori (Μακρυχώρι) Kavala

Makrychori (until 1926 Uzoun Kioi[1]) is a village in the Municipality of Nestos, Kavala regional unit, in the region of East Macedonia and Thrace. According to the 2021 census, the municipal community of Makrychori, which also includes the settlements of Kryoneri, Nikites and Platania, had 112 residents, down from 120 in 2011. It is located at an altitude of 220 meters, in the Lekani Mountains. It is located 32 kilometers northeast of Kavala. Due to its location, it is considered a gateway to the villages of the former municipality of Oreinos.[2]

North of the village was an important mining center, which, based on the pottery found, began operating between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC. The mine produced iron and possibly precious metals, such as gold. It is not known whether the metallurgical activity continued during Byzantine times. The 16th and 17th century place names, such as Madem Tsifliki, Madem Lofos and Madem Kara, may be related to the metallurgical activities of the Ottoman period.[3]

Makrychori at the beginning of the 20th century had approximately 1,000 inhabitants, all Muslims. After the population exchange, 164 refugee families settled in Makrychori.[4] According to the 1928 census, it had 673 inhabitants, while its population increased to 1,063 inhabitants in the 1940 census.[5] With the Kapodistrias program, it was incorporated into the municipality of Oreinos, and previously belonged to the community of Makrychori.[6] .

The church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross is located in the village. Makrychori is a designated traditional settlement.[7]
