Makrychori (Μακρυχώρι) Evoia

Makrychori is a mountainous village in the municipality of Kymi-Aliveri, in the Regional Unit of Evoia. According to the 2011 census, it has 52 inhabitants. It is built at an altitude of 520 meters[2] on a mountain slope.[3]

Historical information

The area in antiquity was the boundary of the territory of ancient Kymi.[3] The village is mentioned in an Ottoman tax register of 1474 under the name Makrihor. According to the register, it had 25 houses.[4] In September 1822, during the revolution of 1821, civil strife took place in Makrihori.[2]

In 1836, Makrychori was annexed to the municipality of Konistria. With the abolition of municipalities in 1912, a community seat was designated, which remained until the Kapodistrias plan, when it was annexed to the municipality of Konistros. With the Kallikratis

plan, it was annexed to the municipality of Kymi-Aliveri.[3]

Points of interest

The village is home to the 14th-century cross-roofed church dedicated to Saint Demetrius. The interior of the church is listed. The frescoes include life-size depictions of saints and martyrs, the Deisis, as well as images from the lives of Jesus, the Virgin Mary and Saint Demetrius. The founding inscription of the church is also preserved. According to the census, the church was renovated at the expense of Michael Tamisas and his wife Irene in the year 6811 from the creation of the world, which corresponds to the year 1303.[5]
